Happy Birthday Marle!

Hello! As of recently, CQFG has entered full development, and as a result, I have had less time to spend with people.

However, I still want to share parts of the development with ya'll, and let you guys know how the game is going periodically. Both so that people know how the game is going, but also so that I can keep track of the development progress myself. I want to be able to look back on parts of the development for CQFG so I can know which parts I struggled with, and make changes on my next project that will make these easier. .

So in celebration of this, and in celebration of Marlethians Birthday, I would like to go over some details of the game currently, and also go in depth about each of the different parts of the games development, (Art, Music, Writing, Etc) and how those are going.

 

 

 

WRITING

 

I have recently finalized the script, changing a lot of the pacing and a lot of the dialogue. I currently believe that you will be able to see each of the characters' personalities inside of their speech.

 

Due to my dyslexia, there are many spelling mistakes, and almost every single playtester can back this fact up. Once the game is basically done, I will spend the rest of the time until release, fixing all the spelling mistakes so that Milk Gets Real and Mez will leave me alone.

 

There is currently a lot of writing expanding on the lore of each of the characters (parents, places of origin, etc etc...) however I feel most of it wont be shown... in this game.

ART

Art is the part I have struggled with the most, if you know me, you know that I have had a difficult relationship with art in the past. However, this project has kind of rekindled my love for making art.

Currently, art is the main focus of the game. I have been hard at work basically since September began working on art. And I am happy to say that the first half of the game is is fully sprited!! I was so happy from this achivement actually that I took about a 3 day break from working to begin a better minecraft playthrough. Now I can't say that the art is actaully any good... but this is Contours Quest For Grapes, not final fantasy 17.

Also! You may have noticed that Contour does not apear to be in his normal attire, well that is becuase, as you might be able to figure out, Contour and Goozey (and sort of bluu bot but also not really) have new designs! This is because, well I wanted them to have new designs, so I gave them new designs. Currently, only Contours Ref sheet is done, but all the design changes for Goozey and Bluu bot are ready in my head.

I tried to give contour more of a Little Man vibe rather than his normal Mysterious appearence to fit in with the personality of his character.

 

 

MUSIC

Music has been (not surprisingly) the easiest thing for me to complete, as you might imagine. There will be over 16 songs in the game, (as of coding this into the website, there are far more) and 12 of them are complete, with flps existing for the others. All 16* music tracks will be on spotify.

Scrapped town song - "A town called Argent Garden"

I scrapped the song because it was unintentionally WAAAAAAY similar to Ahead on our way from FF7, First song I have subconsciously remixed.

 

"NIGHTMARCH"

I'm really really proud of how this song in particular is turning out, I made it during my study hall in about 45 minutes and I am very proud of it. And while i cant show what part it is for specifically, I think some of you may be able to get an idea of it in your head.

 

 

CODING

The first wave of playtesting is done! I have had a total of 4 people playtest the Intro section of the game, and have gotten good feedback about almost every aspect of the game. However, many many bugs were found, over 5 pages full of things I need to fix, By the time of writing this, I have only fixed around 3 pages of the bugs. Coding for the second half of the game has barely started development, however with the knowledge I gained from the first half of development, it should literally take like, no time at all to complete. Coding for the battles has not been implemented like at all unfortunately, as it would turn out, making a fun battle system using RPG Maker MV is really fucking difficult and not fun like at all. However all the moves, weapons, and items are fully conceptualized.

 

 

CONCLUSION

Earlier in a Voice call with character designer Marlethian, I talked about how I thought the game would either be done on his birthday, or on halloween of 2025. As development has furthered, I realized that this is a completely unreasonable timeline, and had unintentionally put a layer of stress on me that I do not appreciate from myself.

At the current pace the game is going at, Id expect it to release sometime near the end of 2025, or sometime, near the beginning of 2026. That being said, that is also not a promise, recently my monitor has been experiencing bugs, and has been randomly turning off, which one might imagine is not good.

I want nothing more than to finish this game and get it in your hands as soon as I possibly can. But I would also like the game to be moderately good, so I'm gonna keep working on it until I think it's an alright game. --James Out Woods
